As we've seen time and time again, whenever the Chronicle's editors have an opportunity to call for higher income taxes, they jump on it with both feet. Today is no different:
Congress is unlikely to renew the draft, and two-year draftees might not be able to master quickly enough the skills demanded by today's weaponry and electronics. However, American troops should not be pressed to the breaking point just to allow the administration to avoid the political and financial heat a major expansion of the military - and accompanying tax hike - would create. If the war isn't worth a national commitment from all, then it isn't worth piling on the shoulders of a few who are paying the price of mistaken White House and Pentagon policies. The editorial is also intellectually dishonest. It calls for a tax hike to support "mistaken White House policies." I guess the editorial board just couldn't decide between a gutless anti-war stance and a militant anti-achievement stance.
